The day started at 5am. I met Santa at the shop and we worked on the last few custom made rings that had to be on the sleigh by tonight! And we made it! Some of the more interesting ones were a fellow who needed a silver Mother's ring with a ruby and sapphire in it. We happened to have a blank silver mounting in just the right size along with the stones he needed!
I mounted two loose diamonds for earrings, sized several rings and wrapped a lot of presents today.
It was a great Christmas Eve ....I'm going home to look at my toes for three whole days!
See you next week....
Merry Christmas
Patti, Lynne and JoAnn

Today it was a pleasure to be at work. The shop was closed so I had Pandora Radio on the Christmas station. It gave me the creativity to take an old illusion plate ring mounting apart. Then I cleaned and dressed it out so I could solder the head and the pretty diamond onto a new engraved shank. The client is going to were this white gold ring in between a rose gold and a yellow gold matching band. We had taken the past and meshed it with the present. I love Christmas!

By Michelle Graff National Jeweler Magazine Los Angeles--A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the parent company of Cash4Gold, claiming the company misrepresented its services and defrauded customers who sent in their gold jewelry in exchange for cash, court documents say. The 100-plus-page complaint names Cash4Gold's parent company, Green Bullion Financial Services LLC, and was filed as a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Oct. 6. The suit was filed on behalf of two California women who were former Cash4Gold customers, but attorneys in the case are asking the court to open the suit to all persons "who suffered injury from Cash4Gold's unlawful practices from Oct. 6, 2003 to Oct. 6, 2009." In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim that Cash4Gold's "unlawful behavior can be distilled down to three specific frauds." First, according to court papers, Cash4Gold promises to provide the highest care for any goods sent to its facility, a promise asserted in two sections on the company's Web site. "However, this high degree of care is a lie, as items sent to Cash4Gold are commonly 'lost,'" the suit alleges. "At best, this means that Cash4Gold is not exercising the high degree of care it has promised and is liable for negligence. At worst, this means that Cash4Gold is intentionally stealing the goods sent to it and is liable for conversion." The second alleged example of fraud outlined in the suit involves Cash4Gold's 12-day return policy, which asserts that customers who are unsatisfied with the price offered to them for their gold jewelry may contact Cash4Gold and have their jewelry returned to them. "However, this 'return policy' is a lie," the lawsuit alleges. "Importantly, it is measured from the date on the check sent to consumers. Then Cash4Gold, as a matter of company policy or practice, routinely issues the checks, sets them aside, and mails them out days later so that customers do not receive their checks until after the 12-day return window has already passed...customers are simply unable to reject Cash4Gold's offer or to have their jewelry returned to them. In fact, in many cases, Cash4Gold actually melts down jewelry before the 'return period' has even passed, since it knows that due to its mailing schedule, customers literally have no way to successfully exercise the 'return policy.'" Third, the suit states that "to support and disguise the two major frauds of stealing customers' jewelry and completely fabricating the existence of a return policy, Cash4Gold utilizes a 'customer service' staff which is deliberately frustrating and openly lies to the company's customers." The suit claims that Cash4Gold's customer service representatives are specially trained in techniques designed to mislead consumers. In a written response to the lawsuit sent to National Jeweler, Cash4Gold denied the allegations. "Cash4Gold is aware that a complaint has been filed," the company said in a release. "The company believes that this complaint is without merit, and Cash4Gold intends to vigorously defend the case." Plaintiffs are asking, among other things, for permanent injunctions against Cash4Gold, barring the company from "utilizing any monies acquired by Cash4Gold's unfair business practices," and compensatory, actual and punitive damages. |

When I arrived at work yesterday, JoAnn was all a-twitter because the bathroom had flooded and she couldn't find the source of the sound of rushing water. Suddenly she remembered the outside facet we use for washing cars and cleaning the building.
We found that someone had turned on the water hose outside our building during the night but didn't turn it off so the back patio flooded and it seeped into the bathroom and break room.
First, we learned from our insurance agent that our insurance doesn't cover damage "due to rising water"....interesting. The result of Katrina rulings, I suppose. But I had already called the police so we could have a record of the time and damage
From the police we learned that several homeless people had put up tents between our building and the creek, hidden from our view, but known to the police. The next thing he said stunned me. "This is just one of several tent cities around Tupelo. They were probably trying to take a shower or get water for cooking when they were surprised or simply forgot to turn it off."
I called a construction worker friend who was not working due to the economy and asked if he would like the job of cleaning up, making repairs and drying out the carpet. He came right away, brought two friends and had the whole messed over by 3pm.
So today I learned: Insurance is great..but read the fine print.
Homeless people are in my backyard and I never knew it.
Treat your friends with dignity, especially when they are down on their luck. They are still your friends.

I saw my friend Marc Perler this morning and as two small business owners usually do, we compared notes. Although we are doing well in what is termed a "recession", as everyone knows, "it could be better". Marc commented that people often ask him about how his business is doing. I liked his answer. "I'm not in the same business I was five years ago, but I'm still in business." We are the same. Retail used to be a big part of our income. Not so much now. In the past three years (after the fire in 2005) we've found our target market, lowered our costs, and focused on what is important to us. We discovered that our clients are women over 50 and we custom design work for them. So I thought I would reflect our new direction in my blog. You'll be hearing more of what's actually happening at Way-Fil Jewelry rather than the world.
Because that's what is important to us!

I went to see the new movie "Julie and Julia" yesterday. If ever there was a way to show how blogging has become the new way to communicate, this movie proves it. And, along the way, it show how couples are really the same today as they were decades ago. Love and the desire to finish a project work well with the right support. I absolutely loved this movie. It is a must see for anyone who has a dream of publishing a book or sharing their life with their one true love.

I just returned from a trip to North Carolina and Alabama. Along the way I couldn't help but notice all the billboards, signs and ads for gold buying. It is interesting to see so many variations on this theme. Anyone can buy as long as they have a way to turn it themselves. The most popular outlet is the home parties. This is where a hostess invites her friends over for a party. They bring their "scrap" gold items and while they enjoy fellowship and food, the buyer tests the items and offers the guest a check on the spot. The hostess gets a cut, the buyer gets a cut and you get quick cash. Everyone gets a small piece of the big gold pie.
(Please remember that they are only buying the actual gold content. They are not buying the style, the age, the alloys, the proift someone made selling it to you or the stones...just the actual gold. So the wedding band you bought for $100.00 last year isn't going to get you $100.00 this year.)
For all of you who call and ask about the buyers that set up at motels...it is the same process. Everyone involved gets a cut and you get quick cash...but they are only buying the actual gold product.
Last spring I wrote about ways to donate your gold to your favorite charities and take a donation on your taxes. With this process, there was no middleman and all the funds went to the charity. We simply bagged uthe items and sent them to the refinery. They even paid for the shipping. You didn't take home cash....but for your donation, you took home the GOLD Medal Award for kindness. If your group is interested..just contact me.
