My good friend and mentor Paul Chaney, the grand high pooh bah of the blogging world is about to tie the knot. I wanted to take a moment and wish him and his bride to be, all the best life has to offer.
They met over the Internet, made contact over Christmas and got engaged on Valentine's Day. Don't you just love mushy stuff like that? It makes you know that romance is still around.
Sometimes, I think that men have completely forgotten about romance. I mean, every day someone comes into my shop wanting me to appraise a diamond for them, but not necessarily for insurance purposes, most of the time it is for confirmation of price or the quality of the diamond. They have "researched" all the diamond web sites, grilled every jewelry salesperson for ten miles around town, and then end up on my doorstep, because "they trust me to be honest with them". Why is all this technical information so important to them? Whatever happened to buying a diamond you could afford and making a proposal she'll never forget? You are not buying this diamond for a quick turn investment (I hope!) and if you didn't trust the person you bought it from, why did you buy it? It takes a long time for a diamond to appreciate to the "make a profit" stage. And any woman that truly loves you, would rather you cut off her arm, than give up her engagement ring. To most women, it really could be a cigar band as long as you gave it to her with love.
I see many older couples celebrating 50Th anniversaries and this is the first time he's been able to get her a diamond ring. But you know what always gets to me? She'll be standing across the counter twisting a worn, thin, wedding band around her finger, saying that the new ring is very beautiful, but it could never mean as much to me as the love and the life they've shared with this little wedding band.
By now you think the diamond diva has gone off the deep end! Oh no, I just think there should be a return to romance and love in the acquiring engagement rings.
Thanks Paul, for making me know that romance still lives....congratulations to you both.
