So you still need an engagement ring..and the funds are down...what's a guy to do?
Go with the light weights! With gold today at $920.00 an oz, the mounting is just as important a decision as the diamond is. A traditional heavy ring mounting in 14 karat gold with all the froo-froo (my technical term for millgrain and hand engraving!) is gonna cost over $2,000.00. Unless you are looking at those light weight, can't be re-sized, easy to fall apart, micropave " diasters waiting to happen" mountings. Those are usually cheap because they are cheaply made.
Think about choosing a simple six prong tiffany style solitaire engagement ring mounting for now and putting the rest in a nicer diamond. I personally think that nothing grabs the sparkle better in wedding photos than the tiffany solitaire ring with a matching half round style wedding band.
I hear ya...that is so 1960's, to which I shall answer....so? Classic is timeless and no matter how frilly the styles get, a tiffany solitaire is always in style, easy to care for and really showcases the diamond. The frilly mounting wears down over time. (Just ask any guy who has one of those florentine finish bands from the 1970's.) But a tiffany can be re-tipped and reshanked easily when needed.
So put that 1.00 carat round cut diamond that you searched so hard to find the best deal on in a safe, secure, and inexpensive tiffany solitaire. She'll be glad you did.

I can't agree with you more! Estate jewelry/vintage jewelry/antiques are definitely coming back in vogue. And the best thing, aside from often being better quality, is that it appreciates in value, regardless of the times.
Thanks for an entertaining post.
